Today is April 15 – Income Tax Day. For many, the days leading up to today have been stressful.
If you need a quick, calming remedy, it may be lying at your feet. It’s your pet dog.
Scientific studies have shown that petting a dog can lower blood pressure and decrease anxiety. Many colleges are starting to bring in puppies and dogs during exam weeks to help students copy with stress. And it’s also the reason why therapy dogs make visits to hospitals and nursing homes.
People are programmed to need touch in their lives. Petting a dog impacts your brain. Your brain identifies the things we touch as pleasant, unpleasant and neutral. Petting a dog is interpreted by the brain as pleasant feeling on the skin, which translates into positive emotions. It releases serotonin and dopamine, both feel-good chemicals that can improve your mood and counteract depression.
Now isn’t it nice to know that science confirms what dog lovers have always known? That there’s nothing quite like the love of a dog.
