A BAD HAIR DAY IS BETTER THAN NO HAIR DAY

Teena couldn’t have weighed more than a six-pack of soda. Her gray skin clung to her tiny bones.

The only hair she had were a couple of tufts sprouting off of her forehead. But to another Mexican hairless, and to her owners, she was beautiful. BerthaB2

When the new class began at Rover Reform in January, seven dogs trotted into the classroom and one small bundle was carried in. After digging through the layers of coat, hoodie, and shirt, a smaller bundle was discovered– Teena. When you have no hair, January is awfully cold in the Northeast.

What Teena lacked in hair, she made up in smarts. Sit. Come. Stay. To Teena they all were a piece of dog cookie. But lying down was a problem. When the other dogs in the class heard “Down”, they hit the floor. Teena looked at the floor, up at her owner, and just stood there.

“Down, Teena.”

Teena shuddered. No amount of treats and “good girls” worked. The floor was cold. Colder than the floors in Mexico. And too cold for a dog with no hair.

The teacher put a towel on the floor.

Teena walked over and sniffed at it.

Bertha B1 correctedThe teacher said, “Down.”

First Teena placed one paw on it. Then two. Then four. And plop. She was down.

Spring came. Teena had learned all of her lessons, including Down. She graduated with high honors.

Summer came. Time to chase frisbees and go to the beach. No more shirts, hoodies, and coats. Just sun block. Because when you have no hair, it’s easy to get a sun burn.

A special thanks to Bertha B – our Mexican hairless model who is also super smart, has an extensive wardrobe, and loves to play Frisbee in the summer.

  1. Oh my, these posts just keep getting sillier and sillier. I’m laughing out loud at this one! I can relate to the need for sunscreen (unlike Teena, I do have hair, but I also have pasty white skin!).

  2. Lin,

This post is so cute. I don’t know why but when I tried to comment I couldn’t get onto the page. Check it out with someone else as it may be my computer.

It was nice to see you (and commiserate) at the conference. I queried the agent who was enthusiastic about Coco and am revising Oppo Sits.
